Thrush
Candida is a yeast-like fungus that is a nomal inhabitant of the body. It lives in harmony with certain harmless bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract, skin, rectum and vagina. |
If this natural balance is disturbed, it can lead to an overgrowth of candida and a subsequent infection. The most common symptom is an itchy, watery white discharge, which thickens and becomes like cream or cottage cheese. |
The outer lips of the vagina may be very red, sowollen and tender, and you may experience a burning sensation when urinating. Your partner may complain of a burning sensation of the penis, and may develop swelling and scaly-like pimples sores on the shaft of the penis. |
Precipitating factors include tampons, IUD's anti-biotics, oral contraceptives, perfumed soaps or bubble bath, synthetic underwear, staying in a wet swimsuit too long, hormonal changes during pregnancy. Medical conditions like diabetes, anaemia and cancer which lower the immune system also increase your risk of infection. |
